PATROL RIFLE INSTRUCTOR COURSE

3-Day Course • 21 Minnesota POST credits

This instructor-level course provides officers with the knowledge and skills to effectively operate and teach patrol rifle fundamentals. Students will learn how to deliver safe, repeatable, and high-quality training back at their agency through a blend of lecture, demonstration, and live-fire exercises.

The curriculum covers rifle setup and maintenance, zeroing procedures, tactical ready positions, reloads, malfunction clearance, positional shooting, shooting on the move, and transition drills. Students will conduct teach-backs, run the firing line, and build confidence as firearms instructors.

Prerequisites: Students must have completed an approved firearms instructor course prior to attending this event.

Course Objectives

  • Develop lesson plans and drills for patrol rifle training
  • Zero rifles and diagnose shooter errors
  • Conduct reloads and clear malfunctions efficiently
  • Perform positional and movement-based shooting drills
  • Integrate pistol-to-rifle transition drills
  • Improve communication and coaching as an instructor

Required Equipment

  • Rifle with sling and at least three magazines
  • Duty pistol with 50 rounds of ammunition
  • 1,000 rounds of rifle ammunition
  • Duty belt or load-bearing vest
  • Body armor
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Extra batteries for equipment
