Defensive tactics for corrections officers

4-Day Course • 28 Minnesota POST credits

The Defensive Tactics for Corrections Officers course is designed to give instructors the skills and knowledge needed to train corrections staff in safe and effective control of physically aggressive prisoners under typical corrections operating conditions.

This is a multi-day instructor course approved for 28 Minnesota POST credits.

The course focuses on single-officer and team techniques that reduce the need for higher levels of force while enabling officers to quickly and safely control assaultive prisoners. Students will also learn when and how to apply reasonable force options, as well as practical de-escalation methods.

Training is built around human kinetic principles and designed specifically for the corrections environment. Lessons are highly practical, preparing students to return to their agencies equipped to teach tactics and skills to fellow officers. The program also develops participants as effective communicators, trainers, and mentors, ensuring knowledge transfer from the classroom to real-world application.

The systems and concepts taught in this course integrate easily into existing training programs and can be applied in corrections, security, or other similar organizations.
