RED DOT SIGHT INSTRUCTOR (RDSI) COURSE

2-Day Course • 16 Minnesota POST credits

This instructor-level course provides a comprehensive understanding of the MRDS (Miniature Red Dot Sight) system, associated equipment, policy and administrative proposal processes, shooter diagnostics and corrections, and law enforcement–specific applications. Students will participate in a variety of dry- and live-fire skill-building and diagnostic drills designed to deepen their understanding of the MRDS system.

Upon course completion, instructors will have the knowledge necessary to establish and facilitate an MRDS program at their agency. It is strongly recommended that students are already certified firearms instructors.

  • Optic and equipment selection for law enforcement use
  • Care, maintenance, and installation of the MRDS system
  • Policy development and administrative proposal process
  • Dry fire programming for skill development
  • Zeroing process and procedures
  • Dot acquisition and re-acquisition under stress
  • Recoil management and target transitions
  • Support-hand and strong-hand only techniques
  • MRDS-specific malfunctions
  • Positional shooting and MRDS challenges
  • Shooting on the move with MRDS
  • Low-light MRDS techniques with handheld and weapon-mounted lights

  • RDS-equipped handgun and holster with at least 3 magazines
  • Duty belt and gear (belt-mounted magazine pouch)
  • 1,000 rounds of handgun ammunition
  • Handheld flashlight
  • Weapon-mounted light (optional)
  • Ear and eye protection
  • Spare batteries for lights and optics
  • Lens pen/microfiber cloth/anti-fog solution
  • Note-taking materials
