Scenario Based Training (SBT) is one of the most effective tools for teaching critical skills and improving officer decision-making. When done correctly, SBT builds confidence and reinforces sound tactics. When done poorly, it creates training scars and reinforces bad habits.

The Scenario Based Training Instructor (SBTI) Course prepares officers to safely and effectively implement a scenario training program within their agency.

Students will leave with scenario creation worksheets, sample scenarios, safety checklists, and a practical understanding of how to design, run, and debrief scenario training that maximizes learning.

Course Objectives

• Safely conduct scenario-based training
• Identify and achieve training objectives through scenario design
• Create and implement effective training scenarios
• Avoid unintended consequences and “training scars”
• Prepare students for success in SBT environments
• Productively debrief students after scenario events
• Apply adult learning principles and communication techniques
• Integrate scenario training into department in-service and new hire programs
• Conduct isolation drills
• Use SBT both with and without Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA)
• Incorporate less-lethal tools into SBT scenarios
• Distinguish between using SBT to train vs. evaluate
• Implement use-of-force scenarios safely and effectively

What to Bring

• Duty belt and/or load-bearing vest
• Training pistol (blue/red gun)
• Pen and paper
• Clipboard
• Reflective vest
• Simunition pistol with marking cartridges (NLTA)
• Recommended: Simunition rifle
• Required: Laptop (for recording scenarios)
• Protective gear for NLTA (eye protection, face mask, throat protection, groin protection, gloves)
