1-Day Course – SRO Use of Force Training Update

Who should attend this course?  Any SRO and any use of force instructor responsible for training an SRO at their agency.

In response to statutory changes regarding use of force by school resource officers and other officers working in school settings, we are hosting a 1 day training event designed to equip SROs and those training SROs with a thorough understanding of the new laws in place (Minnesota Statutes chaper 121A.58 and 121A.582).  These laws govern the use of force by teachers, school principals, school employees, bus drivers, and other agents of a school district.  As amended, Section 121A.58 includes school resource officers (SROs), security personnel, and officers who are “contracted with a district.”  These new laws (1) limit the use of force toward pupils to situations where it is necessary to prevent bodily harm or death, (2) prohibit the use of prone restraint; and (3) prohibit the use of compressive restraint on the head, neck, and across most of the torso.

As the legal landscape surrounding the use of force continues to evolve, it is essential for SROs to remain knowledgeable and equipped with the most current information.

The primary goal of this course is to equip SROs and those who train SROs with a thorough understanding of use of force options in compliance with these new statutes.  We will cover modifications of techniques already in the STORM curriculum so they are in compliance with these new requirements.  We will also show several new techniques that can be highly effective in controlling a subject in a school setting, while not violating any of the new statutory requirements.  There is no pre-requisite for this course, we encourage anyone in an SRO role or anyone responsible for training SROs or school security to attend.

Course Highlights:

  • Receive up to date legal changes
  • Learn modifications to techniques already in the STORM curriculum to stay in compliance
  • Learn new, effective, and safe techniques that will meet the new statutory requirements
  • Peer Discussions: Collaborate with fellow SROs and trainers, share experiences, and brainstorm strategies for effective use of force management
