Scenario-Based Training (SBT) is one of the most effective ways to prepare officers for critical incidents, but only when done correctly. Without proper planning, SBT can unintentionally reinforce poor tactics and create training scars. This instructor-level course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to design, deliver, and evaluate high-quality scenario training safely and effectively.

Students will leave with scenario creation worksheets, safety checklists, sample scenarios, and the ability to implement a successful SBT program within their agency. The curriculum emphasizes safety, adult learning principles, and maximizing skill transfer from training to the field.

  • Avoiding unintended consequences and training scars
  • Preparing students for success
  • Effective debriefing techniques
  • Integrating less-lethal tools and NLTA (Simunition, UTM, Force-on-Force, etc.)
  • Using SBT for training vs. evaluation
  • Implementing SBT for in-service and new hires

  • Duty belt and/or Load Bearing Vest
  • Training pistol (blue/red gun)
  • Pen and paper
  • Recommended: clipboard, reflective vest
  • Recommended: Simunition pistol/rifle with marking cartridges
  • Protective gear for NLTA (eye, face, throat, groin, gloves)
